Lady Gray Legacy Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to students who have a mobility disability and, at the time of application, receive services from Buck’s Accessibility Office. Applicants must have distinguished themselves by proving their motivation for self-improvement and/or personal growth by describing their motives in a short essay.
Lady Gray 1990-2001
The Lady Gray scholarship was created to honor Lady, a service dog who helped me to come out of my shell and be an active participant in life. Lady and I lived a life full of adventure and exploration! Horseback riding, sculling on the Schuylkill River, hiking through the forest and along the canal. And then going through college at Bucks County Community College together. Lady was loved and appreciated by faculty, staff and classmates. Gray, P. (2018, November 27th).
Lady and Penny Gray's Story
Lady’s presence brings a special gift of joy into every day of my life. She loves going to college with me and she expresses her opinions to the professors, sometimes with a long, LOUD Moan! The class usually shares the same feelings. It’s a good feeling knowing that Lady’s right by my side while I’m sitting at the computer doing homework for hours, as she is even now.
We have a great time together, spending every beautiful day exploring different parks. Finding that the wooded paths which I thought my chair couldn’t get through, CAN be explored. I just never had as much incentive to try before Lady came along.
Lady’s assistance skills are always improving. She now loves to bring people money or credit cards at the stores, but we still have to work on the giving me back the change, instead of giving my money to everyone else. Her skills with the elevator buttons are improving, too. We still stop on many different floors, but we eventually get where we want to go.
Lady and I attended a 10-week agility course through the Lower Bucks Dog Training Club. It was an extremely fun class. Lady gained a sense of self-confidence, and I learned how difficult it can be to work with Lady off a lead in a room full of dogs and people with treats in their hands.
I haven’t been lonely for a single day since Lady came into my life. I honestly can’t imagine myself being as happy and productive without my Lady to share life with. Thank you so much, Jean and everyone at the Knoll, and a special thanks to Ruth Lock for all her help in making this dream possible.
