To avoid plagiarism and an academic-integrity charge, ensure you are doing your own work at all times and not using unapproved technological aids or sites. Do your own thinking, problem-solving, creating, and writing using approved sources, devices, and resources. Ensure you are not receiving too much help from a friend, family member, or private tutor.
Familiarize yourself with the different types of violations and seek out assistance in understanding them. Learning how to properly quote, paraphrase, cite, and provide works-cited pages can help you avoid plagiarism. You can ask your professor questions during office hours and/or make an appointment with a Writing Tutor (or other subject-matter tutor) at the Academic Success Center.
Tutorials and resources are available for you, so be proactive in seeking these resources ahead of time, such as the Academic Success Center’s handout on “Avoiding Plagiarism: How to Practice Academic Integrity”. Students often have issues with paraphrasing material and rewording information from a source into their own words. This handout provides helpful information on how to properly paraphrase, quote, and cite information from sources.
