4.38 Personal and Professional Development
I. Purpose
To promote the personal and professional development of employees and to assist in the achievement of this goal by providing guidelines for supervisors and employees.
II. Scope
Applicable to all exempt and non-exempt staff.
III. General
The Personal & Professional Development Center is committed to serving the needs of the campus community by offering a variety of personal and professional development opportunities that promote continuous learning.
All programs and services sponsored by the Personal & Professional Development Center are available to faculty and staff of the college at no cost. Courses and workshops are generally offered during normal work hours and vary in length.
IV. Procedures
All requests to participate in campus programming must be made in advance of the scheduled event. Supervisors will make every effort to accommodate employee requests.
Professional Development Programs and Services
Professional development programs relate directly to maintenance or achievement of job related skills.
Exempt and non-exempt employees may attend on work time with the prior approval of their supervisor.
Personal Development Programs and Services, including Wellness
Personal development programs include all activities not related to maintenance or achievement of job related skills.
Non-exempt employees may request in advance a work schedule adjustment (i.e. longer lunch, flexible start or end to the day) in order to participate in a personal development event with the understanding that their normal work hours must be completed in that day. Alternatively, non-exempt employees may request to use any accrued leave, with the exception of sick leave, if the program is scheduled during the work day.
Exempt employees may participate in an event during the work day without the use of leave time; however, as always, exempt employees are expected to manage their program participation with their work assignments and the business needs of their department without regard to a set work day or work week schedule.
