INCORRECT. The police should be directed to the Office of Admissions, Records, and Registration. For the safety of the student you cannot tell another person where a student is at any time.
General Rule
Information about whether or not a student was enrolled in a particular semester is directory information, and can be obtained through the Office of Admissions, Records, and Registration. If the police require more information a subpoena may be required*. The Assistant Dean for Enrollment Services handles all subpoenas. Additionally, FERPA requires notification to the student that a subpoena of their records has been received, unless it is specifically stated on the subpoena that the student must not be notified. All subpoenas must be forwarded to the Assistant Dean for Enrollment Services immediately to ensure accurate and timely notification to the student and response to the subpoena.
* FERPA alows disclosure if a health or safety emergency exists and the information will assist in resolving such cases. You should still refer a person(s) to the Office of Admissions, Records, and Registration.
