2.1 Full-Time Faculty Appointments
I. Purpose
Assign responsibility for full-time faculty hiring and delineate procedures.
II. Scope
All full-time faculty hiring is subject to this policy.
III. General
The President is authorized to appoint faculty at his/her discretion within policies of the Board of Trustees.
IV. Procedures
- When an authorized full-time faculty position becomes vacant, the Provost will recommend to the President whether or not the position should be filled.
- Posting and advertising of the position will be coordinated by the Office of Human Resources.
- Applicants must include unofficial transcripts at the time of application.
- The Office of Human Resources, in consultation with the academic department, should eliminate applications of those who do not meet minimum hiring requirements based on the advertisement. All applications will remain on the college employment tracking system in the Office of Human Resources and be available for review by the faculty search committee.
- Applicants selected for interviews will be required to send or bring to the interview a completed application and names of and contact information for references. Prior to an offer the finalist will be required to submit official transcripts of his/her collegiate work to the appropriate Academic Dean.
- Academic Deans, or any member of the search committee, may not make an official salary offer to an applicant, but Academic Deans may discuss salary ranges with applicants.
- The committee shall recommend candidate(s) meeting the conditions of appointment for each position available to the Provost and the President of the college, who will make the appointment from among the candidate(s) recommended.
- The Provost, in consultation with the Executive Director of Human Resources, referring to current negotiated Agreement with Faculty shall use the following criteria in determining a salary offer to be made to the applicant:
- Full-time college teaching: each year of full-time college teaching experience should be recognized for placement in rank and salary.
- Part-time college teaching: the total number of semester hours taught on a part-time basis should be divided by 60 to arrive at an equivalent number of years of full-time college teaching experience.
- High school teaching: the first four years of teaching experience should be applicable for salary placement. Half of the total number of years beyond these four should be converted to years of college teaching experience, but in no case will the applicant receive more than five (5) years of college teaching experience.
- Other non-college teaching: as reflected in the search committee’s commentary, this category shall be reviewed by the Executive Director of Human Resources and the Provost and credit given for experience, if in their judgment such experience is of value to the college program.
- Related industrial, technical, & business experience: Such experience may be credited toward salary placement if it can be proved that this experience has direct relevance to the teaching position to be filled. Under these conditions, the first eight (8) years should be equated to "four years teaching." Each three years beyond the first eight should be equated to one year of college teaching experience.
- The Provost will prepare the standard form for recommendation for employment and forward it to the President who will offer the contract to the recommended applicant, after a Title IX review has been made by the Executive Director of Human Resources.
- After receipt of the signed contract, the Office of the President will notify the Provost and the Academic Dean. The latter will forward the new faculty member's file to the Provost’s office and will send other applicants' files to the Office of Human Resources according to college regulations.
