Author and Artists' Talk for Reality's Fugue VR Experience Exhibition

Feb. 12, 2025, 2 p.m. - Feb. 12, 2025, 3 p.m.

The Bucks County Community College School of Arts and Communication is pleased to announce that the Hicks Art Center Gallery will host its first virtual reality exhibition, Realitys Fugue : Virtual Reality Meets Art & Philosophy, from February 10 through March 1, 2025. An author and artists talk with author F. Samuel Brainard and artists Carol Cruickshanks and Christian Kowalchuk will be held on February 12 at 2 pm in the gallery followed by an opening reception from 4 7 pm on the same day. Free and open to the public.

Based on his book, Realitys Fugue: Reconciling Worldviews in Philosophy, Religion, and Science, the author F. Samuel Brainard collaborated with Christian Kowalchuk and David Tams to produce and direct the approximately 10-minute VR experience, which features immersive and dynamic visuals, realistic audio narration and motion tracking without hand controllers. Unlike gaming VR environments where the goal is usually to successfully achieve a task, Realitys Fugue : Virtual Reality Meets Art & Philosophy guides participants through nonhierarchical worldviews of the universe demonstrating an origin story illustrated by our creatively shared experiences. Both the book and the VR production strive to prove how we are simultaneously individuals and collective beings.

F. Samuel Brainard, Ph.D., is an independent scholar of Asian and Western religions and philosophy. He has taught at Temple and Rutgers Universities. His work has been published in the Journal of the American Academy of Religion as well as in his prior book, Reality and Mystical Experience (Penn State University Press, 2000). This is his first book for both general and academic audiences, and several of the concepts that it develops reveal connections to his earlier work.

Realitys Fugue : Virtual Reality Meets Art & Philosophy was produced and directed by F. Samuel Brainard, Christian Kowalchuk and David Tams with contributing artists Aurelle Sprout, Carol Cruickshanks, Stacie Speer Scott, and Susanne Davis. Patrick Nugent was the developer and created the 3D Art with Katerina Pak. Linda Erickson composed the music and Jenny Paschall was the narrator. The technical consultants were Danger Donaghey, Oscar Keyes and Matt Seibert. Special thanks to Stanley Timek, Bucks County Community College, Jeffrey Jacobson, Carol Parker, Susan Bindig, Elizabeth A. Joscho Stephan

March 23, 2025, 4 p.m. - March 23, 2025, 6 p.m.

His roots lie in Gipsy Swing music, the style pioneered in the 1930s by the legendary jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt. Joscho Stephan has not merely absorbed this music, but also interprets it on the highest level and is actively engaged in extending its boundaries. Despite his youth, after four highly acclaimed CDs and a DVD he has played his way into the illustrious circle of the finest Gipsy Swing musicians in the world.
Great jazz musicians such as Paquito de Rivera, James Carter, Charlie Mariano or Grady Tate enthusiastically praised the talented newcomer after performing together. He has toured Australia with top guitarists Martin Taylor and Tommy Emmanuel and has performed with his own bands (trio to quintett) on numerous important European festivals (among others in Slovenia, Italy, France, Poland and the UK).
His concert appearances in New Yorks Lincoln Center or the American country capital Nashville were equally well-received, as were his performances in the New Yorker jazz shrine Birdland.

Cultural Streaming Series: Duke Ellington and His Orchestra Live in Brussels

April 10, 2025, 12:15 p.m. - April 10, 2025, 1:15 p.m.

Take in recorded performances of leading classical and Jazz artists, ensembles, and orchestras from around the world in the comfort of the Zlock Performing Arts Center.

The year 1973 saw a Belgian edition of the Jazz from Newport event, featuring one of the very last performances that the great Duke Ellington ever gave. He passed away less than a year later and one of jazzs most important sparks of genius the one that got the whole world swinging faded out.
So-named Duke for his elegance and debonair image, hed lost none of his charm by his mid-70s, addressing the audience with the words: all the kids in the band want you to know that we do love you madly. Indeed, it was Dukes charm that held such appeal, but his ease belied a hard journey that began in Washington pool halls where he learnt to play piano as a teenager, and then as a young adult forced to play jungle music for all-white crowds on his way up.
Stream is 54 Min long. Streaming previously recorded concert. FREE and Open to the Public

What is Bucks+?

Bucks+ is a co-curricular engagement program designed to help you find and participate in activities happening virtually, on-campus, throughout Bucks County, and beyond! Students earn points for activities, event attendance, and accomplishments at varying levels. The program focuses on competency areas employers are looking for: Community Engagement, Financial Literacy, Global Awareness, Personal/Professional Development and Bucks Pride. Students track their progress and share their accolades with peers, advisors, and employers using Suitable, an impact measurement tool for academic institutions.

Why Bucks+?

Bucks+ was originally adopted by the Business + Innovation Department and is modeled after Temple University’s recently developed Fox Leadership Development Program (FLDP). Suitable will transfer the applicable points from our Suitable system to Temple's when students transfer. For Business Administration students, it's 500 points and for all others it will be the points earned within the Career Starter badge that will transfer. This program is employed by Temple's Business School. Students earn points by attending or participating in extra-curricular/co-curricular events.

  • Bucks Pride

Bucks Pride is all about fun and social interaction. Find opportunities that enable you to make connections with fellow students, student organizations, student leaders, and the Bucks County Community College staff. Explore your interests, learn a new skill, or just blow off a little steam after your classes.

  • Personal & Professional Development

Personal development means growing in areas that will help you to be your best self. This means learning physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, financial, career and relationship skills that will serve you your entire life. Professional development means growing different areas of yourself that will help you be a better employee. What will help you in your personal growth will certainly also carry over to your professional life.

  • Financial Literacy

Financial literacy opportunities give you the chance to gain an understanding of various financial areas including topics related to managing personal finance, money, borrowing, and investing.

  • Global & Cultural Awareness

Global and Cultural Awareness opportunities will help you develop the ability to understand, respect and work well with people from diverse cultures in our interconnected world. The idea behind global awareness is to create global citizens who are open to those raised in different countries, cultures and religious settings.

  • Community Engagement

Community Engagement opportunities encourage students to engage with community and civic society. Working in collaboration with community organizations enables development of the ability to work well with others, and build transferable skills such as leadership and communication. These are real opportunities to test knowledge, skills, and attributes, including problem-solving, creativity, and critical thinking.

Not transferring? Employers look not only for academic excellence but also initiative. A 2016 survey conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers showed that being involved in extracurricular activities had more influence on hiring decisions than a student's GPA. Research by Gallup also shows that students involved in extracurricular activities are 60% more likely to feel prepared for life after college. Participating in Bucks+ will showcase your dedication to the continued development of skills in the four competency areas. Earn a digital badge in Leadership and/or Community Engagement and display them on your Linked In profile for even more benefit!
