Students are expected to spend between six and nine hours per week outside of class in activities, such as learning vocabulary, reading, completing written exercises, working on pronunciation, preparing oral presentations, and working with the multimedia files that accompany the text.

This course meets the General Education requirement in Arts/Humanities.
This course meets the General Education requirement in Diversity.

This course, which further develops skills introduced in SPAN111, reviews basic essentials of vocabulary and grammatical constructions and presents some constructions not yet studied. The course also provides material for a solid foundation in conversation and composition. Emphasis is placed on knowledge and appreciation of the culture of Spanish-speaking countries.

Course Learning Goals

Students will:
1. acquire and demonstrate increasing competence in the four language skills: speaking, listening comprehension, reading, and writing [Arts/Humanities];
2. recognize and respond appropriately and with increasing detail to the most common spoken situations;
3. write increasingly complex sentences in Spanish; and
4. explain an increasing number of aspects of life in the Spanish-speaking countries [Diversity].

Grammatical topics:
1. preterit of some stem-changing verbs
2. imperfect tense
3. preterit versus imperfect
4. formation of the present subjunctive
5. some uses of the present subjunctive
6. present perfect tense
7. future tense
8. por versus para
9. conditional tense
Vocabulary and social contexts:
1. more nouns and verbs used to talk about daily activities
2. nouns and verbs relating to occupations and the workplace
3. nouns and verbs relating to travel, technology and social problems
Cultural contexts:
1. more study involving Hispanics in the United States
2. Hispanics - daily life and the workplace
3. visiting Spanish - speaking countries
Assessment Methods for Course Learning Goals

Students will:
1. take quizzes and tests;
2. complete assignments, such as short compositions and grammatical exercises;
3. perform listening comprehension exercises; and
4. participate in oral interviews and/or presentations that assess proficiency levels.
Quizzes and tests taken in class include the cultural topics presented in the course. Students articulate similarities and differences in the various cultures of the world and demonstrate familiarity with the skills necessary to make informed judgments.
