- Music Fundamentals introduces basic musical concepts, develops rudimentary skills in musicianship, and functions as a precursor to the study of music theory and ear training.

Course Learning Goals
Students will be able to:
- Define musical notation with regard to concepts of pitch, duration, dynamics, melody, harmony, and fundamental theoretical structures [Arts/Humanities];
- Construct musical notation with regard to concepts of pitch, duration, dynamics, melody, harmony, and fundamental theoretical structures [Arts/Humanities]; and
- Read music in both written and aural contexts.

- define and recognize time signatures and meters in written and aural contexts
- define and recognize rhythmic concepts in written and aural contexts
- define, recognize, and apply key signature concepts in the contexts of the circle of fifths and in parallel and relative key relationships
- define and identify intervals, triads, major and minor scales, and simple harmonic progressions in written and aural contexts
- define and apply in written and aural contexts concepts of pitch, intensity, duration, and timbre
- demonstrate functional keyboard geography skills regarding pitch location, half/whole steps, enharmonic equivalents, intervals, triads, and major and minor scales

Assessment Methods for Course Learning Goals
Course-specific content will be assessed via homework assignments (workbook and instructor-generated), quizzes, and exams. A departmentally-generated final comprehensive examination will be administered to assess all subject matter components that are detailed in the Learning Goals for this course. -
