- VI. Catalog Course Description
- This course combines beginning compositional techniques with site-specific dance work. The course re-familiarizes the basic choreographic techniques, comprehension and implementation of movement creation, and the utilization of original choreography in and outside the studio space. The course promotes improvisational movement choices to fully explore student artistic vision.

Course Learning Goals
Students will:
- recognize dance/choreography in a non-traditional dance space/studio;
- embody unique environments to express the movement learned in an unconventional dance space;
- use problem solving on a more advanced level in relation to dance composition;
- demonstrate/refine a personal artistic aesthetic with improvisational choices;
- recognize how to properly use a site for site specific dance: respecting the space/community; and
- discuss the required text as it relates to dance composition.

Planned Sequence of Topics and/or Learning Activities
- Manipulation: augmentation, diminution, mirroring, religion, isolation, accumulation, inversion, retrograde, transposition, transformation, embellishment, cannon, transitions and splicing.
- Solo: Clear concept. Showcasing a cohesive story line with movement.
- Duet: Cannon, unison, mirroring, contrast, opposition, and spatial relationship/ interaction.
- Trio/Small group: entrance/exit, progression, repetition, design tension, unity, cohesiveness, overlapping.
- Directing envisioning, lighting, costumes, teaching, and rehearsing.
- Reflective written assignments outline the creative process.
- Discussion of journal entries relating to the assigned readings.

Assessment Methods for Course Learning Goals
- Choreographic assessments: Short movement phrases of 1-2 minutes long are showcased bi-weekly within the classroom to examine what the students have learned. These choreographic assessments determine the knowledge and comprehension of the student in relation to the elements of dance composition. They take place in and outside the studio space.
- Reflection written assignments: Short essays examining the choreographer's creative process for each of the movement assessments.
- Journal: Personal journal entries are kept weekly reflecting on passages discussed in class regarding the text and assigned readings.
