- This course provides on-the-job experience and observation in a field directly related to the student's academic preparation and career objectives. Periodic meetings between instructor and student are held to review actual experience and observation in light of theory and skills learned academically.

Course Learning Goals
Students will:
- apply on-the-job experience in a field directly related to the student's academic preparation and/or career objectives; and
- demonstrate the results of the experience in written communication through the preparation of a comprehensive paper.

Planned Sequence of Topics and/or Learning Activities
- periodic meetings between the instructor and students discussing academic and employment concerns
- employment in a position in the field of biology, biotechnology, or environmental science for a total of 167 hours and the evaluation by the employer using criteria established by the instructor in conjunction with the employer's standards of performance
- written paper submitted by the student that details the following information:
- the name and location of the company/organization providing the co-op
- the mission statement, brief history and organizational structure of the company/organization providing the co-op
- the student's role within the company/organization providing the co-op and an evaluation of the academic skills required to succeed in this role
- an analysis of the tasks completed during the co-op and recommendations for alternatives that might improve the overall performance of the company/organization providing the co-op and/or the value of the co-op experience for the student
- a list of experiences obtained throughout the co-op that enhance the student's qualifications for a future job opportunity

Assessment Methods for Course Learning Goals
The assessment of course learning goals is based on evaluation of the student job experience through an employer performance evaluation using coordinated criteria, periodic meetings with the instructor to ensure student progress, and a final paper submitted by the student. -

Students use educational resources as approved by the department and specified in the individual instructor's syllabus.
