- In addition to class studio time, students are expected to work outside of class each week. Students will need to purchase materials and supplies.
- VI. Catalog Course Description
- Students learn basic color concepts including theory, perception, chromatic relationships, phenomena, terminology, physics, psychology and harmony. Projects emphasize perception, creativity, conceptualization, problem-solving, skill-building, expression, execution, teamwork, research techniques, and presentation. Working in paint and/or paper serves as the basis for learning the principles of color.

Course Learning Goals
Students will:
- employ the technical skills of 2-dimensional design to explore color theory;
- identify various aspects of color phenomena, such as types of contrast, mixtures, and transparency;
- apply the elements and principles of design as they pertain to color in 2-D design and composition; and
- analyze visual solutions through critical assessment using appropriate vocabulary.

- investigate the material characteristics of color in paint and/or paper
- recognize the basic structure of color (i.e., hue, intensity, and saturation)
- develop and demonstrate sensitivity to color phenomena
- apply spatial relationships as they relate to color
- explore the psychological effects of color, and their emotional, symbolic, and verbal associations
- apply image research of world cultures as design and color resources
- use appropriate vocabulary to evaluate and critique personal work and that of their peers

Assessment Methods for Course Learning Goals
- Works are assessed through critiques, based on the successful conceptualization, design, execution, and completion of specific assignments.
- Individual meetings with instructor are held to assess students' overall progress, artistic growth, and safe practices.
- Additional evaluative tools may include one or more of the following: performance-based tasks, discussions, exercises, written assignments, research-based reports, presentations, online activities, quizzes and/or exams.
