- In addition to class studio time, students are expected to work outside of class each week. Students work with nude models. Accommodation can be discussed with instructor. This course meets the General Education requirement for Arts/Humanities.
- VI. Catalog Course Description
- This is an introduction to the concepts and techniques of drawing. The course stresses disciplined draftsmanship. Students analyze the structure and appearance of natural forms. Relying on their perception, observation, and memory, they apply basic drawing skills. Black and white media are utilized to explore space, value, and volume.

Course Learning Goals
Students will:
- create the illusion of what they see in the natural, three-dimensional world on a two-dimensional surface [Arts/Humanities];
- employ the technical skills of drawing using traditional black and white media;
- identify the elements and principles of design as they pertain to drawing skills and composition; and
- analyze visual solutions through critical assessment using appropriate vocabulary.

Planned Sequence of Topics and/or Learning Activities
- practice representational drawing of still life arrangements, architectural space, the human figure, and landscapes
- use traditional black and white media, such as pencil, charcoal, ink washes, pen and ink, and other appropriate media
- analyze visual relationships through comparison: proportional relationships, comparing simple versus complex objects, objects to one another, objects to negative space, and an object in relationship to the picture plane
- apply 1- and 2-point linear perspective to create the illusion of 3-dimensional space
- define space, value, tone, volume, and texture
- describe elementary ideas about abstraction
- use appropriate vocabulary to evaluate and critique personal work and that of their peers

Assessment Methods for Course Learning Goals
- Works are assessed through critiques, based on the successful conceptualization, design, execution, and completion of specific assignments.
- Individual meetings with instructor are held to assess students' overall progress, artistic growth, and safe practices.
- Additional evaluative tools may include one or more of the following: performance-based tasks, discussions, exercises, written assignments, research-based reports, presentations, online activities, quizzes and/or exams.
