- This course examines the various classifications of the law and the rights and responsibilities imposed on the business community by our legal system. It introduces students to the evolutionary process of the legal system and its impact on the individual, business environment, and upon society as a whole.

Course Learning Goals
Students will:
- determine the scope and importance of the law and its impact on society;
- demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental concepts, principles, and rule of law that apply to both the individual and business;
- describe the functions and operations of the court system and governmental administrative agencies and the effect of their actions on both individuals and business;
- recognize that in a diverse society, differences of opinion as to beliefs and fact are commonplace and that the legal system evolves to meet the ever-changing needs of society; and
- explain the interrelationships between the legal system and the social system within which we exist and the need to carryover individual ethics and social responsibility into the business environment.

Planned Sequence of Topics and/or Learning Activities
- understand the classifications, purposes, characteristics, and sources of law
- recognize the importance and need of ethical standards and social responsibility in society
- understand the role of the state and federal court systems in meeting the needs of society
- recognize the need for alternative methods of managing disputes
- understand the role of the U.S. Constitution in protecting both individual and business rights
- recognize both the role and function of administrative agencies
- realize the importance of International Law in dealing with disputes arising from the globalization of society and business
- distinguish between criminal acts and tortuous conduct and understand the impact of each upon both the individual and society
- recognize the various classifications of contracts and the elements of contract formation
- examine the various factors that affect a person's ability or capacity to enter into a legally binding contract, as well as the various defenses available to avoid contractual liability
- understand what is meant by the principal-agent relationship and how that relationship is created and what liability is assumed by each party
- recognize the differences between the major forms of business organization and the advantages/disadvantages of each
- examine the effects of major legislative enactments designed to provide and protect the rights of an individual in the workplace (This includes the review of the Fair Labor Standards Act, the Occupational Safety and Health Act, the Employment Retirement Income Act of 1974 (ERISA), Social Security and Worker's Compensation Laws)
