- This course is an introduction to health coaching and is designed to prepare students to be employed as a health coach within the field. Topics covered include scope of practice, code of ethics, skills to facilitate client behavior change, basics of wellness visions, and the design of effective coaching programs.

Course Learning Goals
Students will:
- Explain health coach's scope of practice and the legal and ethical considerations surrounding the profession;
- Demonstrate effective forms of client-coach communication utilizing motivational interviewing techniques [Oral Communication];
- Design an effective coaching program that fosters positive approaches to support behavior change and lay the foundation for a trusting client-coach partnership;
- Identify reliable sources of health information for client-selected session topics [Information Literacy]; and
- Execute successful coaching sessions that exhibit respectful informing, empathy, and compassion for a client.

Assessment Methods for Course Learning Goals
To assess skills learned, students are required to complete class discussions and activities, watch videos prior to completing quizzes, and complete practice coaching sessions that are reviewed by the instructor for feedback.
Students are required to complete at least two practical skill evaluations in addition to the practice coaching sessions held throughout the semester. -

The required textbook is selected by the full-time faculty teaching this course and is specified in the course syllabus created by each instructor and distributed to each student upon enrollment and attendance in class. Students are given multiple, additional resources throughout the semester to support learning.
