- VI. Catalog Course Description
- This course teaches the principles and applications of first aid and safety so that the student can correctly respond to medical emergencies. Successful completion satisfies the certification requirements for Responding to Emergencies and CPR courses of the American Red Cross.

Course Learning Goals
Students will:
- demonstrate an understanding of how the Emergency Medical System (EMS) works and the citizen responder's role in the EMS system, including how and when to call EMS personnel [Critical Thinking];
- identify the signs and symptoms of breathing emergencies, including choking, and demonstrate how to provide appropriate care [Critical Thinking];
- identify the major risk factors for cardiovascular disease, and identify strategies to mitigate them [Critical Thinking];
- recognize signs and be able to demonstrate appropriate care of a possible cardiac emergency [Critical Thinking]; and
- demonstrate how to appropriately apply first aid for bleeding, animal bites, insect stings, and musculoskeletal injuries [Critical Thinking].
