This course is mandatory for students on academic warning or probation who successfully appeal to exceed the credit limit of their academic status.
Academically dismissed students must enroll in COLL115 as a requirement for reinstatement to the College.
- VI. Catalog Course Description
- This seminar for students on academic warning or probation and for students reinstated to the College focuses on improving academic performance. Students identify factors interfering with their academic progress and develop and implement specific action plans that identify strategies and college resources necessary to improve their academic status.

Course Learning Goals
Students will:
- identify personal and academic factors that compromise their academic status;
- design a detailed action plan to improve academic success;
- utilize class, College, and web resources to implement their action plan; and
- increase personal responsibility and self-regulating behaviors.

Planned Sequence of Topics and/or Learning Activities
Students will:
- complete a variety of self-assessment to identify personal and academic strengths and weaknesses;
- collaborate with the instructor to utilize information obtained from self assessments to develop an action plan to improve academic status;
- write both academic and personal goals that are specific, measurable, realistic and timely;
- select and implement necessary actions to achieve identified goals;
- implement time management techniques to prioritize and accomplish academic and personal responsibilities;
- participate in group activities and class discussions on accepting personal responsibility;
- use an effective decision making model to identify a possible solution to a current academic or personal issue;
- monitor and evaluate ongoing progress and challenges through guided journal entries;
- conference with the instructor on a regular basis to assess progress and to address personal and academic obstacles to success;
- complete instructional packets on specific topics related to the College’s academic policies and procedures; and
- utilize the Student Information System to access midterm grades, print program evaluations, select courses, and create a class schedule for the following academic term.

Assessment Methods for Course Learning Goals
Students will:
- track progress by monitoring performance in other courses;
- write guided journal entries;
- monitor their progress and document their achievement of course outcomes by compiling a portfolio of work that demonstrates effort, progress, and reflection on the learning process;
- conference with the instructor throughout the semester to review the portfolios to provide both formative and summative assessment of the process and outcomes of learning; and
- improvement in their Grade Point Average (GPA).
