To everyone taking the Summer 2008 Journalism 175 Distance Learning class: Congratulations! You're about to discover the thrills and pressures of daily deadline journalism.
Three books: "News Reporting and Writing" by Melvin Mencher "The Associated Press Stylebook" Newswriting on Deadline, by Tony Rogers Access to a computer with word processing software (preferably Microsoft Word), an Internet hookup, and e-mail Transportation to get to events you'll be covering
You'll write about a dozen articles over the course of the semester. You'll cover crime, the courts and town government meetings. You'll write articles for the college's student newspaper. And you'll interview people and use the Internet and other electronic databases to dig up information. THIS IS NOT A THEORY CLASS. YOU WILL BE WORKING IN THE REAL WORLD, WRITING REAL STORIES ABOUT REAL EVENTS.
