Celebrate the Arts at Bucks with the Dave Douglas 3 Jazz Concert
Acclaimed trumpeter leads unique drummer-less trio at 7 p.m. April 22 at the college’s Newtown campus to kick off two-week celebration
Bucks County Community College launches its annual celebration of the Arts at Bucks Wednesday, April 22, with a performance by the Dave Douglas 3 jazz trio. The concert gets underway at 7 p.m. in the Music & Multimedia Center on the Newtown campus.
Led by master trumpeter Dave Douglas, the group also consists of Donny McCaslin on saxophone and Marcus Rojas on tuba presenting new, drummer-less trio music composed by Douglas. The Dave Douglas 3 have also appeared in festivals around the world.
The two-time Grammy-nominated Douglas has earned national and international acclaim including “Artist of the Year” by such organizations as the New York Jazz Awards, Down Beat, Jazz Times, Jazziz, and the Italian Jazz Critics’ Society. He’s currently the artistic director of the Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music at the Banff Center in Alberta, Canada, and the co-founder and director of the Festival of New Trumpet Music, which will celebrate its 7th year in 2009.
Arts at Bucks is a showcase of the educational and cultural opportunities available at the college, which is quickly becoming the area’s cultural magnet, according to John Mathews, the college’s Assistant Academic Dean for the Department of the Arts.
“The academic tradition in the arts culminates after months, weeks and days of instruction and hard work with these celebratory events, represented by two weeks of exhibitions, performances, demonstrations and readings,” notes Mathews. “This year we’ve added to our celebration and included established artists, Dave Douglas and James McBride, to share their talents.”
Other events include concerts by faculty and students April 23, 26, 27, and 29; the 44th annual Student Exhibition at the Hicks Art Center Gallery April 24 – May 9; poet Steven Huff May 1; best-selling author James McBride May 2; and open studios and demonstrations May 3.
