Bucks Offers Free Tuition to County Residents

Those seeking retraining can earn up to 30 credits in one academic year, saving nearly $3,000 in tuition costs

As unemployment climbs to its highest rate in 26 years, Bucks County Community College is taking action to help laid-off workers get back on their feet. The Board of Trustees has approved waiving tuition for unemployed residents for up to 30 credits, a savings of up to $2,970.

The program will allow the unemployed to explore new career options and gain valuable skills in a tight labor market, according to Dr. James Linksz, college president.

“This program can help make attending college possible for those who have lost their jobs in this difficult economy,” said Linksz. “Armed with new or improved skills, people will be better positioned to discover new opportunities and re-enter the workforce.”

To be eligible, the applicant must be a resident of Bucks County, and must have been permanently laid off from a full-time position since December 2007. The applicant must not be receiving financial assistance for education or retraining from the former employer or the government.

Up to 30 credits may be taken within one academic year on a space-available basis, which means after those paying full tuition have registered. The program will be in effect through January 2010, with students able to complete their studies by August 2010. Although tuition will be waived, students must pay for all applicable fees, books, and supplies.

In addition to the free tuition program, the College's Career Services website has helpful links and resources to help applicants determine what might be the best fit for retraining or a new career. Prior Learning Assessment is also available, which might determine if life experiences equal college credit.

“Bucks can help students think creatively about their skills and talents,” said Karen Dawkins, Vice President for Planning & Assessment and Dean of Student Affairs. “College courses and programs can help people initiate a new career path.”

The office also works closely with Pennsylvania CareerLink, which has a wider range of programs for the unemployed, and can be reached at 215-781-1073.

Bucks County Community College offers nearly 90 programs of study, including many certificate programs that require 30 credits or less. Classes are held online, and at campuses in Newtown, at the Lower Bucks Campus in Bristol, and the Upper Bucks Campus in Perkasie. For a complete list of opportunities, visit www.bucks.edu.
