Stella Elkins Tyler: A Legacy Born of Bronze

Reception: Tuesday, September 14, 4:30 – 7:30 p.m.
Gallery talk by Dr. Roberta A. Mayer at 6 p.m.

Stella Elkins Tyler was almost fifty years old when she began to work as a serious sculptor in the early 1930s under the tutelage of her mentor Boris Blai, a former student of the famous French sculptor, Auguste Rodin. Tyler's work is highlighted here in the first major exhibition since her death and documented in a new catalogue titled Stella Elkins Tyler: A Legacy Born of Bronze. The exhibition is spread across campus in three different venues. At Hicks Art Center Gallery, a collection of both small and large bronzes, many privately owned, is on view. At the Library, the process of making bronze sculpture is presented in the context of Timeless Offerings, a contemporary piece done as an homage to Tyler. Also included are several of Tyler’s plaster models and some fascinating primary documents. Finally, Tyler’s large outdoor bronzes owned by the College are on permanent display in the gardens and in front of the Gateway Center.

TheStella Elkins Tyler: A Legacy Born of Bronze exhibition and catalogue have been supported by grants from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, the Bucks County Community College Committee on Cultural Programming, and the Bucks County Community College Foundation.

The 80-page, full-color catalogue may be acquired at Hicks Art Center Gallery or at the BCCC Library circulation desk for a $20 donation to the BCCC Foundation.  Group tours of the exhibition are available. For information, please call 215-504-8531.
